A Milestone in Head & Neck Cancer Surgery at SNIMS
The Department of ENT–Head & Neck Surgery at SNIMS has successfully performed the institution’s first-ever ‘Commando Surgery’ (Hemi-mandibulectomy with Radical Neck Dissection) for a patient with advanced carcinoma of the oral cavity.
In another significant first for SNIMS, the surgical defect was reconstructed using a Pectoralis Major Myo-Cutaneous (PMMC) Flap. In the absence of an in-house plastic surgeon, the entire reconstruction was skillfully carried out by the ENT surgical team.
Anaesthesia support for the prolonged and complex procedure was provided by Dr. Shaji and the team from the Department of Anaesthesia, ensuring safe and smooth perioperative care.
The patient has recovered well, was discharged a few days ago, and is now able to eat normally. She is being evaluated for adjuvant radiotherapy as part of her ongoing cancer care.
