In a proud and heart-touching moment for Sree Narayana Medical College, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) celebrated the successful discharge of a preterm baby who fought against the odds to survive. The baby born on November 9, 2025, at 28 weeks of gestation and weighing just 860 grams, was discharged on 27th November after 49 days of specialized neonatal care.
The newborn required immediate ventilator support at birth due to extreme prematurity. Under the dedicated supervision and expert clinical management of Neonatologist Dr. Thomas Renjith, the baby progressed steadily, overcoming the challenges commonly faced by extremely low birth weight infants.
The NICU graduation ceremony was conducted. The event was attended by key members of the institution, including:
Lt.Gen.Dr. Ajith Nilakantan, PVSM (Retd) Executive Director and Medical Superintendent Dr. Darly Saramma Mammen, Head of the Department of Pediatrics Dr. Manjusha K, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Associate Professor, Paediatrics Dr. Thomas Renjith, Neonatologist Lt.col. Amitha Naze, Nursing Superintendent Dr. Deepika Dr. Bidisha, Obstetrics department
Speaking at the event, the team expressed immense pride in the achievement. They highlighted that the baby’s recovery is a testament to the commitment, round-the-clock monitoring, advanced neonatal care practices, and compassionate teamwork of the NICU staff and Pediatric department.
The parents, visibly emotional, thanked the medical team for their dedication and continuous support over the past seven weeks. They expressed profound gratitude for receiving their child in good health, free from major complications, and stable enough to go home.
This remarkable milestone stands as a significant achievement for Sree Narayana Medical College, demonstrating its growing excellence in neonatal care and its capability to manage extremely premature infants with high survival outcomes. The college emphasized that such success stories inspire them to continue advancing pediatric and neonatal services, ensuring accessible, high-quality care for families across the region.
The program concluded with a message of hope, celebrating the resilience of the tiny newborn and the unwavering commitment of the NICU team—symbolizing that every life matters and every small victory counts.
